From our very own Hope...

I have never been sure if fairies existed. My grandmother would take me into the 150 acres of forest and meadows that hid our home, and talk about her fairy friends and speak to them. I couldn't see them and finally told her I couldn't. She told me of the gift of 'sight'. I wondered later- is this like the Easter bunny or Santa Claus? I did, however, develop a special 'feeling', which came from being in the surroundings she brought me. Something like a familiarity of a special noise or panorama that reminds me of those magical places of my grandmother's stories when I come into contact with similar areas, wild and mainly untouched.
I set up the fairy sightings section, on my site, because I wanted to inspire children to write. I was surprised that the first year only yielded stories from adults. I still remained skeptical. I work with PhotoShop and thought the pictures sent in could have been created within a PhotoShop or similar program.
I walk a beautiful trail around a lake several blocks from my home in the city. This lake is surrounded by trees and not visible from any road. Many people who live here don't even know about this lake. The City Parks department maintains it, but only to the degree as to remove fallen trees from the path, refilling the cedar chips as the trails continue to sink into the surrounding peat bog. Part of the 'path' is a floating dock and Parks Department maintains the cedar railings and put more floatation devices in whenever the dock has sunk too close to the lake's surface. It is a rarity to walk and cross paths with other people as I continuously circle around the ½ mile trail.
I have been walking this trail for close to twenty years, and there are several spots where the familiar ¡feel¢ of fairies occur. One particular area feels very strong. Last year I took my camera to the lake to take various photos of areas I could use as background for my PhotoShop work. I wanted to get pictures of the area that always told me, by the familiar feeling, that this was a place teaming with fairies. The photo I am attaching is what appeared when I opened my camera files. This spot is in a dark area and there is very little light sifting through the dense foliage directly over the spot. Light is coming from behind, to the left, but the area behind this photo is blocked from sunlight by a hill. There is light approaching from the direct left of this spot. Overhead it is dense and this area is almost always in the shade, as it was when I took this picture. I have tried to think how this picture could have occurred. I had taken many pictures that day and in two different frames, other than this one, were soft yellow orbs. I thought they could be from a drop of water on my lens. Pictures taken before and after those frames, in sunny areas, didn¢t show any ¡orbs¢ that could have been caused by water droplets. The attached picture shows a glowing hot pink rectangle. A mystery as to how it could have occurred.
I have tried to keep an open mind throughout my life about fairies. I like to ¡believe¢ as it evokes a loving memory of my grandmother. I pretended to believe because I have hoped that the children in my life could grow up with the same sense of magic. After this photo I am a little closer, than middle of the fence, in accepting that fairies just might exist. I have started taking children to this place and showing them the picture.
